Tues Feb 13 - Class 7

Reading Discussion

Our discussion forum for this week asks you to respond to the second part of Lev Manovich's essay on After Effects. In the part two of his After Effects essay, Manovich describes what he sees as fundamental pardigm shifts in the development of motion graphics. He introduces opposing terms like "moving image" and "modular media composition" and discusses how our culture is a a "hybrid visual culture". Manovich outlines what "deep remixability" is and how it describes our software enviornment. We will review these terms in relation to the essay.

Essential Training Motion Graphics

488 Project 1 Submission and Screening

During this time, students enrolled in 488 have submitted their Visual Countdown project and we will screen the work as a group and open up discussion and critique. Students in 388 could consider the countdowns we screen as a reference point for the projects they are working on.

Visual Countdown Project Demo and Work Session

Workflow: sketching -> storyboarding -> building assets -> animating -> rendering

A brief demonstration will be given to walk through some of the initial steps in designing your Slate Project. It is important to begin by planning and sketching, and then developing or building assets. Design Boards are a first step. From there you might go into developing assets. For one of the example projects, this meant creating the number and background graphics that came from scanned constrcution paper using Illustrator. In another example the type and graphic assets were created directly in AE.

The next stages of the project includes creating compositions for animation. As this is done, you may find the need to build more assets or adjust your plan. You may also find new or better ways of accomplishing something that you have struggled with before. We have enough time in the development of your project to experiment and you are strongly encouraged to work through experimentation.

Following our demonstrations, you may begin working on your project. Ideally, you will have some design boards that can be reviewed during class today.
