Course Introduction and Attendance

Welcome to Drawing for Digital Media - MAGD220!

Syllabus: The course syllabus is available on this website and on the course D2L site. For the first class meeting, we will work our way through the syllabus. A course syllabus outlines the expectations, policies, and procedures of the course. It is important that everyone is familiar with this information and knows how to to find what they need as we get started for the semester.

As the course is introduced, there will be more information about how we will be using this course website, D2L and the "gameful" approach to projects and assignments. To summarize, the way that you achieve a specific grade in the course is by earning/accumulating points. At the beginning, everyone will start with 0 and work their way up. We will begin the semester with some introductory lessons. After that, students may choose from the various groups of assignments that are focused on skill development. At certain times projects will become available and should be completed before moving on. There are 4 required projects and 1 optional project. Throughout the semester, there will be class time devoted to working on assignments and projects. The course calendar gives an overview of how the semester will be broken down by week and by class session.

Software and Lab Overview

The 2051 Computer lab is our primary point of contact. Everything we need should be available in the lab. Our primary software is Adobe Illustrator. Our assignments will include opportunities to practice and demonstrate skills with drawing and vector graphics development. Our projects will include opportunities to build and use graphic assets in relation to concept development for games. The majority of work will be submitted as images on D2L and you will be required to create prints of your projects work.

Open lab hours will be posted as soon as they are available. Our primary software, Illustrator, should be available on most campus computer lab machines that include the Adobe Creative Suite. Your high quality digital prints will be made through available through the Arts Media Center in the basement of CA or else at the Media Lab in Andersen.

Discussion Forum

Each week there will be a reading assignment and discussion forum on D2L. After reading and reviewing the question, you can post your response. The discussion forum responses will be reviewed and are an opportunity to earn points in the couse. Some of the readings are directly related to what we are creating in class and others provide more historical and theoretical framework for working with digital media. Responses should address and answer the question in a narrative way. Depending on the question, responses do not have to be more than a few paragraphs in length - but there is no length requirement.

Week 1 Discussion forum is more of a way to introduce yourself to the professor and talk about your expectations for the course.
