Reading Discussion & Presentation

We will start with an introduction to our Discussion Forum. Our assignment is from the text "The Language of New Media" by Lev Manovich. In the assigned section, Manovich introduces the term Human-Computer-Culture Interface" and this will be the starting point for our discussion.

Critique & Discussion: Project 1

All submitted artwork for the character project, Project 1, will be collected from the dropbox. The work will be displayed on screen and we will work as a group to discuss what we see. Topics for critqiue and discussion:

  • Project Development and Final Versions
  • Use of Vector Graphics
  • Illustration and Character Style
  • Design Principles in Character Design (Unity/Harmony, Balance, Scale/Proportion)
  • Use of Shape
  • Use of Color
  • Visual Relationships between Color, Shape, and Object
  • Inventiveness and Creative Approach

We will view each work individually with time for the designer responsible to provide some information about the work. Then, the other designers can offer comments, feedback, and questions.

The "golden rule" for critique: 'give the sort of feedback that you would also want to receive' in order to improve my work and develop visual design skills.

Principles of Design

Hierarchy

Hierarchy - the arrangement or presentation of elements in a way that implies importance. Visual hierarchy influences the order in which the human eye perceives what it sees. This order is created by the visual contrast between forms in a field of perception.

Work Session: Assignments

During the remainder of the class session, students are expected to work individually. Choose something from the list of Assignments. The assignments do not need to be completed in any specific order. It is also not required that you complete all of the assignments. Rather, they are designed to help explore and develop skills that are useful in creating vector graphic artwork. Take your time with the assignments and work at your own pace.

Work sessions will operate in an open way. Ask questions if you need help. You might also work with or talk with other students while you are working. The work should be done individually but that doesn't mean in complete isolation. The studio work time is designed to allow discussion, feedback, questions, assistance, and anything that will help support you in developing your ability to create vector graphic artwork.
