Drawing Exercise - Tonal Drawing

This drawing exercise will include work from observation that focuses on exploring light and shadow. For the majority of the semester we have been drawing with contour line. Contour line lends itself very well to working with 2D space, illustration, and line art styles. Tonal Drawing focus on drawing approaches that show volume through shading. For our drawing and sketches today, we will look at some basic object shapes and explore how light and shadow can be used to draw them effectively.

  • grayscale sketches
  • highlight
  • transitional shadow, midtone, middle values
  • core shadow
  • reflected light
  • cast shadow

Project 2 Work Independently

A brief review and demonstration will be given in class for Project 2.

This project work session is designed for you to get as much work done as possible. To move your project forward, we will discuss individually what you are working on and some possible strategies for designing an environment.

Finalizing Project 2

An overview and demonstration will be given in class for movingProject 2 work to our final presentation format.

To complete our project work, you will need to use one of our project template file. This presentation format for will include a screen/level design view, examples of all repeated/tiled elements (like a tileset format), examles of color swatches and patterns, and mobile device screen mockups.

To create your final presentation format before submitting the project, download the project template file and choose the appropriate Illustrator file for your designs (verticle or horizontal). Copy and paste your design work into the template. As you move your content over, make sure to create and organize your layers. Use clipping masks to crop your design to a mobile screen dimension.

Common screen sizes and dimensions can be found online - screensiz.es is an example of one resource. Make a rectangle with the proportions of a common screen size and then scale it down to create a clipping mask.

Project 2 may be submitted in the D2L dropbox at the end of class or before the beginning of our next class session.
