Artist Statement

A grid is an organizational system constructed to compress, display, and order information. It is made up of complex relationships between individual units and the larger systems that they make up. A grid is a simplification or generalization at the same time that it becomes something infinitely complex and multi-valent.

I respond to the characteristics of a grid by creating gridworks. Initially the work begins with marks that are made by hand or drawing with digital plain-text characters. These basic marks are like units that then are combined to create small drawings that act as modules. Each drawing module is then composed and recomposed into larger more complex drawing which form the basis of gridworks. Through building-up and construction in layers, the image that is produced becomes a compression and reorganization of the individual units that it is comprised of. I incorporate elements of drawing, painting, animation, video, installation and performance into my investigation of relationships formed within and between grids.
