Tues Apr 17 - Class 23

Info Viz Project Submission, Critique, and Discussion

To complete our unit on infographic visualization, we will collect copies of everyone's work. The files may be submitted through the D2L dropbox or manually to the instructor station.

Directions for critique and discussion will be given in class. Because the projects make use of the same content, we may not need each person to present their work and their approach. Rather, we will screen each project and repeat as necessary while making notes and comments.

388 UN-Commercial Project & 488 Logo/Ident Bumpers Introduction and Screening

The next project this semester will ask you to create your own animated sequence. For the majority of the semester we have focused our attention on animating one or two visual elements - like typography and illustrations. But as we have read about and experimented with, it is possible in Motion Graphics to combine a wider range of media content. Standard television commercials are a good example of the use of composite moving images, and like music videos, they are what Manovich considered part of our contemporary hybrid visual language. Rather than create a straight-up product commercial, we will look for ways to recreate the style and aesthetic of existing commercials but with an altered message. The UN-Commercial Project Page and The Logo/Ident Bumpers Page outline the general expectations of the projects.

Several student projects for each of these topics will be screened in class. Some of the work is not available online, and the screening will be done based on high quality projects submitted in previous semesters.

Professional Project References (Parody, Satire, Critique, and Real Commercials)

The first part of your work will be to identify a brand or commercial that you would like to us as a reference. Then, you should work to create design boards for what you will do with your project and how it will relate to your source reference. Design Boards, Storyboard, and script/outline will help you to identify what you kinds of images and video content you will need to generate for the project. This initial stage is important for this project because it likely contains more production than some of our previous work. Preliminary work including design boards and concept will be due for Class 25.
