Class 13

Drawing Exercises

In your sketchbook, draw 8 thumbnail sized boxes. You will be making 8 separate short drawings in class today. They should be about the same size, but our focus today is on sketching and drawing quickly, so don't get to wrapped up in the individual boxes. Each of your drawings will begin with a prompt that you will then try to illustrate quickly.

This series of drawings is meant for "Concepting". Concepting is a form of illustration used in the development of ideas visually for use in a variety of other media. The majority of our work in MAGD220 could be considered in the area of concepting. Concepting and Concept Art are used in pre-production industry processes. They are a way to get get a lot of ideas into a visual format so they can be developed, discussed, refined, or trashed. (Wikipedia Concept Art). Concepting can begin a number of different ways - from drawing on a napkin or sketchbook to using a tablet device or a laptop. Some people think of concepting as visual brainstorming meant to test out what something could look like without getting too precious about its appearance. Concept work begins as sketches that are a part of a development process. Further concept work would include how those sketches might get redrawn, refined, modified, and added to in attempts to further clarify and develop the appearance of something. Today we will work on the early sketching aspect of concepting.

8 prompts will be given in class. Respond to the prompts in drawing within the time limit for each one. (our prompts came from this site) (concepting ideas and prompt generator). After sketching we will spend a little time sharing our concepts with each other.

Reading Discussion

Based on some of the responses posted to our Discussion Forum, we will take some time at the beginning of class to talk about our reading from the Language of New Media.

Project 2 Work Session

During our open work session today, you should continue developing your project. Professor Miller will work with each student to see your progress and talk about the project. Your sketches and concepts are important at this stage because they help to determine what will be the best strategy for developing your work.

You are required to submit at least one image to the D2L dropbox. That image should be in either PNG or PDF format that has been exported from your Illustrator work file. It could include your scanned sketches and vector illustrations. A reminder at the middle of the class session will be given so that everyone can make sure to submit something.

Project 2 In Progress Discussion

For our in-progress discussion today, we will load all of the submitted work. Each image will be displayed and the artist/designer responsible for that work will explain their concept and ideas for the work. The rest of the group will respond with questions and feedback.

Project 2 Work Session

During our open work session today, you should continue developing your project. Professor Miller will work with each student to see your progress and talk about the project. Feedback, sketches, and concepts are important at this stage because they help to determine what will be the best strategy for developing your work.

Class 15

In-Class Midterm Drawing Assignment

Based on your experience working with drawing and vector graphics processes, you will be asked to create a new work from start to finish during this class session. Guidelines will be provided below. You are expected to work in any way that you choose while staying within the guidelines. You may elect to discuss options and request feedback with other class members during the work session (quietly), but your drawing must be completed individually. By the end of class, you will submit 1 (one) PNG file in the lab using Airdrop. A 10 minute warning will be given towards the end of the session, but it is expected that most students will have already completed the assignment.

Assignment Guidelines and Info

Drawing Subject: TBA

You are asked to take our drawing subject (, arrange however you'd like, and then draw. Begin sketching with an eye towards composition. Start with a few thumbnail sketches. You may do as many drawings as you feel necessary and it is to your advantage to do some basic drawing exercises and sketches first. Transfer one drawing from observation into vector graphics. Follow guidelines outlined on this page, but be flexible in how you approach the subject. This drawing is meant to be a creative exercise that allows you to demonstrate what you have learned so far this semester. A high quality submission will demonstrate an understanding of drawing processes and apply vector graphics methods in aesthetically interesting ways. A high quality submission will be more than a quick sketch and will not appear unfinished or incomplete. You should expect to spend 1/3 of your time developing your drawing and 2/3 of your time processing your work in Illustrator.
